Germany dominates in the global skimmed milk trade. In 2014, Germany exported 389 thousand tonnes of skimmed milk totaling 146 million USD, 9% under the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Italy, where it supplied 42% of its total skimmed milk exports in value terms, accounting for 42% of Italy’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of skimmed milk. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced, except for 2008, 2013 and 2014 when high import prices made it more notable.
Belgium and France were among the other main global suppliers of skimmed milk in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were South Africa (+65% per year) and the United Kingdom (+15% per year). Belgium significantly strengthened its position in the global export structure.
In 2014, Germany’s top 5 trading partners were Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, China and Denmark, with a combined share of 84% of Germany’s skimmed milk exports. The share of the Netherlands increased (+7 percentage points), while the share of Italy illustrated negative dynamics (-5 percentage points).
