Emerald engagement rings have long been connected to luxury, elegance and wealth. In similar fashion to ruby or sapphire baubles, these rings are usually sought out not by the diamond-loving crowd, but by those a bit more savvy about jewellery, what each stone is worth, and what it represents.
There is, after all, no reason for emerald wedding rings to be any less popular than their diamond counterparts. Pound for pound, an emerald can be of significantly higher value than a diamond, and these stones are certainly not lacking in the ‘celebrity endorsement’ department either. In fact, over the centuries, more than a few celebrities have been seen sporting green-stone-centric jewellery.
Among the early fans of emerald jewellery are Nero, emperor of Rome, who was said to watch gladiator matches through an emerald, and Charlemagne, who had one that he got as a present embedded into his armour. However, the gem’s main claim to fame is its appearance on celebrity engagement rings, which helped raise its profile among casual jewellery shoppers.
The first of these emerald engagement rings to come into public prominence belonged to Grace Kelly, who received it from her lover, Prince Rainier of Monaco. The elegant and sophisticated film star also probably broke the scales in term of carat, with the stone in her ring weighing in at a whopping 12 carats, an extravagant move typical of the golden age of European aristocracy and Hollywood film stars.
More modest, but no less dazzling was the emerald belonging to Elizabeth Taylor. While not encrusted in a cheap engagement rings under 500, this jewel, bestowed upon the actress by Richard Burton, nevertheless constituted an engagement present, which makes it eligible for this list.
Another celebrity to be presented with a stunning emerald ring was Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of one of the most famous American presidents of all time. Jackie’s ring commemorating her engagement to John was topped by a 3-carat emerald that perfectly complemented her mysterious personality.
More recently, celebrities to catch the public eye by sporting gorgeous emerald engagement rings include Sharon Stone, whose partner presented her with a 3.5 carat emerald ring, and Hale Berry, who was recently spotted on the red carpet wearing a green-tinted ring.
While not as strong as blue sapphire engagement rings association with the British Royals, it is nonetheless easy to see that emerald rings have enough of a celebrity backing to make it an appealing factor for couples shopping for the perfect stone for their jewel.
