A new author, Erin Dunbar, has launched a Kickstarter campaign for her novel, ‘Our Own Mistress’, which is based on sex, power, and how certain people, with the help of a woman, explore a balance between both. She stated that, “this book is inspired by [her] own intimate experiences, and even though there will be a lot of erotic content in the novel, the novel is not erotica.”
Through her experiences, she discovered hidden aspects of sexuality and human relationships that motivated her to write this book. She has also studied deviant sexuality for over a decade, which allowed her to delve deeper into the concept.
‘Our Own Mistress’ attempts to break the stigma associated with certain types of sexual activity, and with gender-related taboos. It provides a different perspective to the basic human instincts that are love and sex. Taking inspiration from real people, real relationships, and misrepresented cultures, Dunbar has created a novel that will offer a fresh insight into sexuality.
The novel revolves around a young woman who, struggling with her submissive nature, ends up in a foreign land alone and without work. She faces violence, but meets some people who help her discover her strengths. The story touches on various concepts she has witnessed and experienced, such as LGBTQA relationships, BDSM, feminism, and surviving assault.
The novel may sound like ‘Fifty Shades of Grey,’ but the author insists that it is very different, and, in fact, it provides practical and real insight into sex and relationships which will be relatable for a lot of people.
To release her novel, Dunbar has started a Kickstarter campaign with a goal of raising $12000, most of which will be utilized to spend one week in London researching the locale and cultures in which then novel takes place. If all goes well, she will complete her novel by the end of 2016, and donors will have the chance to get a print, e-book, or audiobook copy by backing the Kickstarter project.
