About Atherectomy Devices
Physicians use atherectomy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure, to remove plaque that blocks vein grafts or coronary arteries. Plaque can also accumulate in the peripheral or coronary blood vessels. Physicians use a catheter that has a sharp blade at the end for the ablation, abrasion, or excision of the atherosclerotic plaque. Atherectomy helps reduce the burden of soft calcific plaque, minimize vessel wall trauma, and change the vessel compliance that leads to a decrease in the need for bail-out stenting. The procedure can be performed along with balloon angioplasty and stent placement or as a stand-alone treatment option. In the market, available atherectomy devices are based on laser (excimer), rotational, directional, and orbital technologies.
