SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND INTERVENTIONS INTEGRATED INTO PALMDALE SCHOOL DISTRICT CULTURE

Palmdale School District is committed to providing its students with the best education possible, and that includes social and emotional well-being. Because of this commitment, Palmdale has implemented multiple social-emotional learning outcomes and programs to ensure that positive relationships and safe environments are achieved at school.

The student interventionist program at Palmdale School District strives to establish alternatives to traditional disciplinary procedures. This is accomplished through building relationships with students and their families and advocating for supports that teach rather than punish. Trained behavioral interventionists contribute to a campus wide environment focused on safety and consistency, where students can develop their interpersonal skills on a path to achieving personal and academic success.

Interventionists receive monthly training in applied behavior analysis, and many are attending Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) training with their school site teams. PBIS is a system where school administration identifies behavior expectations and then teaches them to students. PBIS creates a positive school environment and provides incentives and recognition to students for positive behaviors.

Training on Unconscious Bias is also offered to adults in Palmdale School District. Unconscious Bias involves getting adults to acknowledge and address their own personal biases. This helps our students and community by empowering the adults to not only acknowledge internal biases but to become reflective about their relationships and practices as they work with students, parents, and the community.

Palmdale School District has also implemented group counseling sessions into the social-emotional learning model. These groups meet each week to promote the development of communication competence, problem solving skills, and anger management within students. Groups that meet include:

  • Anger Management Group (conflict resolution skills, decision making skills, problem solving skills and positive replacement behavior development), Mindfulness Group (relaxation techniques and coping skill development)

  • Social Skill Development Group (self-advocacy skill development, emotional/physical boundary comprehension and implementation, and communication skill development)

  • Heart Trauma Group (coping skills for symptoms of depression, anxiety and PTSD)

  • Girls Group (emotional intelligence development, communication skill development conflict resolution skills and confidence boosting activities)

  • Boys Group (emotional intelligence development, emotional management and accountability practice)

The goal of the social-emotional health efforts at Palmdale School District is to help meet the needs of students beyond the academics.  Students are taught to become confident in communicating their thoughts and feelings while also providing them with empathy and understanding.

About Palmdale School District

Palmdale School District dates back to the late 1800s when German and Swiss families emigrated to the area and called it “Palmenthal” after mistaking the local Joshua trees in the area for palm trees. Now serving the majority of the city of Palmdale, California, the district has approximately 19,000 students from Transitional Kindergarten (TK) through 8th grade. Palmdale School District’s vision is to be a district where every student leaves ready for success in high school, college, career, and the global world. The mission of PSD is to implement it’s vision with actions and services targeted to students, parents, and staff so students can live their lives to their full potential.
