Practicing mindfulness involves getting into the habit of paying attention to thoughts, emotions, and working to be as active as possible in the present moment without losing balance or falling victim to negative thinking. As Canadians experience more stress in their everyday lives, especially related to work, having the right tools to cope will become key in improving and maintaining mental health and wellbeing.

Canadians experience spike in stress in last 5 years

Recent findings reveal that over one third of Canadian employees are more stressed than they were five years ago. Simultaneously, 27% rated their work-related stress as high to extreme in the past six months, when it came to managers, it jumped to up to 34%. The fact that these statistics seem to be following an increasing trend signals a need for boosted awareness and prevention in order to avoid future health complications including cardiovascular disease and obesity.

The time to act is now

Luckily, more and more employers are recognizing the importance of introducing mental health programs, part of which is mindfulness training. ‘The situation is alarming. We are already aware over 500,000 Canadians miss work due to stress and mental health related conditions. This is not only a burden to companies, but an incredible strain on how people in our communities feel and deal with their stress and anxiety. I am so pleased each and every time I have the opportunity to help people manage this. Whether it’s through focused breathing, sensory awareness or newness in familiarity exercises and more, when people learn alternative methods to cope, everything is impacted. We have seen boosts in productivity, performance, employee satisfaction and even job retention. I would encourage all companies to seek this type of support,’ says Alexandra.
