FAIRHAVEN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RECOGNIZED FOR STUDENT CIVIC LEARNING AND ENGAGEMENT

Fairhaven Elementary School uses civic learning to prepare students to become actively engaged members of the community. In recognition of their efforts, Fairhaven school has been selected to receive the California Department of Education Civic Learning Award of Merit for 2019.

The Civic Learning Award for public schools is co-sponsored by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond and California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye. The award program also identifies models of civic learning that can be replicated in other schools so that more children can have the opportunity of creating a positive culture at their school and becoming productive members of their community.

Fairhaven Falcons engage in civic learning through many means. They begin the school year with Start With Hello Week, where all students participate in various activities to create a culture of inclusion that values each student at the school. Students also participate in Kindness Week activities with the goal of continuing with this culture throughout the school year.

Fairhaven students learn about the importance of being involved in the community and local politics by voting and attending public meetings. Service events lead by students include making and delivering letters, cards and snacks to local hospitals, residential living homes, fire and police stations, and the American Legion Hall. Other projects include campus beautification, Pennies for Patients, and fundraising to make blankets for the local homeless community.

“We are proud that our students have embraced many opportunities to serve their community and have learned how to be involved, responsible and compassionate members of our society,” said Principal Karen Sandors.
