Villa Park High School Girl’s Golf team members were honored at Angel Stadium in a ceremony for students with exceptional athletic and academic accomplishments. The event occurred before a major league baseball game between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Minnesota Twins. The student athletes from Villa Park were accompanied by Head Coach Chris Salio onto the playing field at Angel Stadium to receive their awards as a 2019 CIF Southern Section Team Academic Champion team with the highest collective grade point average (3.91) in the enrollment category of 1,500 or more students.
“These amazing student-athletes continue to represent not only the 1,300 student-athletes on campus, but also exemplify academic achievement for all 2,300 students that comprise our associated student body,” stated Principal Ken Miller, Ed.D. “This third consecutive recognition of Villa Park Girl’s Golf as a CIF Southern Section Team Academic Champion team epitomizes our Spartan focus on winning in the classroom as well as on the field.”
Villa Park High School also had 20 out of 23 Varsity Sports qualify for Top 25 grade point average status in the CIF Southern Section. Seven Villa Park teams earned Top 10 status and one team, Competitive Cheer, was the CIF Southern Section Academic Champion Runner Up.
“We are so pleased to share these achievements by our student-athletes with our community,” said Athletic Director Tom Fox. “Not only did our Girl’s Golf team win in our enrollment category, they also had the second highest grade point average in all categories across the Southern Section!”
Varsity Girl’s Golf is the sixth Villa Park High School team to win a CIF Southern Section Academic Championship in the last three years. Orange Unified School District joins Villa Park High School in thanking all of the dedicated teachers, coaches, families, and community partners for their ongoing support of the students’ athletic and academic achievements.
