INFOWORKS, a company introduced at IOT TECH EXPO North America 2019 and CES 2020 with their FMCW LiDAR sensors for autonomous vehicles, announced that they will start developing sensor technologies for self-driving vehicles in partnership with Hyundai Motors.
FMCW LiDAR is a sensor that measures the distance of an object with a laser and models its surroundings with precise 3D images. This LiDAR has overcome the limitations of existing Pulse LIDAR. It is possible to detect objects with a high reception rate even in over 99% density of smoke, fog, snow, rain and strong sunlight of 80,000 Lux. In addition, it is characterized by low signal interference between LiDARs, which can address concerns that object recognition errors may be caused by interference phenomena that may occur due to the increase in the number of self-driving cars equipped with LiDAR sensors in the future.
FMCW LiDAR is expected to be applied in various areas of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including Self-driving cars, Robot taxis, Robots, and Drones by its advantages and it is attracting worldwide attention.
In line with this trend, various automotive manufacturers and LiDAR sensor companies are working on developing coherent FMCW LiDAR. There is also a fierce competition to preoccupy this technology such as the FMCW LiDAR manufacturer Blackmore being sold to Aurora in 2019. In Korea, INFOWORKS succeeded in developing coherent FMCW LiDAR was recorded as the first in Korea, the second in the world and this technology leads them to R&D collaboration with Hyundai Motors.
Park Hyun-ju, CEO of INFOWORKS commented, “It is a momentum that our excellent LiDAR sensor technology was recognized as a core technology by automotive manufacturers, and it is meaningful that we can grow into a next-generation core sensor supplier by developing products for self-driving cars and robots, and drones. We believe that this technology can be applied to various fields through cooperation with worldwide companies.”
