Legendary Scientist Integrating Basic Biology into Clinical Medicine – Jean-Francois Geschwind

San Francisco, California, United States – Apr 23, 2021 – When it comes to identifying physicians/scientists who have left a mark on medical science in America and the world; one name that comes up consistently is that of Jean-Francois Geschwind, MD.

Born in France; the scientist migrated to USA to study medicine and was exposed to high-level research from the early days in his career. With the passage of time and supported by proper mentorship he received during studying at Medical School at Boston University and residency at the University of California in San Francisco he blossomed into a leading medical scientist capable of integrating basic biology into clinical medicine.

Throughout his career Dr Geschwind has made significant contributions to the field of medicine especially in the fields of interventional radiology and oncology. One of the areas of medical science of oncology where the contributions of Jean-Francois Geschwind have been widely acknowledged is the treatment of liver cancer. Many of his contributions are highly significant because they cover the whole spectrum of medicine from basic science through clinical trials and translational in nature bringing new potential therapies from the bench to the clinic.

Jean-Francois Geschwind obtained his medical degreefrom the Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residential training in diagnostic radiology at the University of California in San Francisco. As a scholar sponsored by the National Institute of health he was able to dedicate one year of his training to basic research under the guidance and mentorship of Dr. Charles Higgins. The focus of the research was on cardiac magnetic resonanceimaging that earned him his first award as a medical scientist.

Jean-Francois Geschwind continued his training as a fellow in vascular and interventional radiology at the John Hopkins University School of Medicine. Upon completion of his traininghe joined the rank of medical school faculty as an Assistant Professor.

After his appointment at John Hopkins there was no looking back as he stepped from one big post to another including the post of the Director of the Vascular and Interventional Radiology and later in the post of a Professor of Radiology and Oncology in the John Hopkins University School of Medicine. Under his visionary leadership the division experienced massive growth within a short period.

“My clinical and research focus has been on the management of patients with liver cancer. I have always followed the three fundamental principles of dedication, determination, and discipline anchored in a strong vision integrating molecular biology into everyday clinical practice. This is why I spent a year learning about molecular biology supported by the American Roentgen Ray Society early in my career. My goal was always to bring innovation to our field of interventional radiology through high level basic and translational research and bring scientifically solid methodology to our clinical effort in the form of robust clinical trials to provide credibility to the nascent field of interventional oncology. In my view, this was the only way to drive interventional oncology into one of the major new fields of medicine and be accepted as one of the four pillars of oncology”, says Jean-Francois Geschwind as he reflects on his career objectives and accomplishments.

After 19 years at John Hopkins, he moved to Yale School of Medicine as Chairman of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging and Radiologist-in-Chief at Yale New Haven Hospital, and Professor of Radiology and Medicine (Oncology). During his incumbency at Yale, he created a research laboratory dedicated to Interventional oncology and changed the name of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology to that of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging to reflect the growing importance of imaging sciences and the impact of image-guided therapy in radiology.

He is now the Chief of Oncology at USA Clinics Group and Oncology Centers and the Medical Director in Oncology and Image-Guided Therapy at Syntactx, a contract research organization located in New York City and now part of NAMSA.
