A home is the backdrop to family life — something Horizon is passionate about providing to children regardless of their situation. Now, the Lancaster-based organization is preparing to open their doors wider than ever before, and they are calling on local businesses to play a role.

Horizon has operated since 2004 as an international not-for-profit organization working to radically transform the way orphaned and vulnerable children are cared for through proven programming in child empowerment and impact investing. With established care centers for orphaned and vulnerable children, what they call micro communities, in Kenya, Guatemala and Honduras, Horizon is currently home to more than 180 children and youths. These communities are at capacity, but there are still more children waiting to become part of the Horizon family — a need the COVID pandemic has heightened.

The pandemic has taken a global toll, but its effect on developing countries is especially devastating. Communities already struggling with limited healthcare and other valuable resources have had a harsh battle with the virus; as a result, many have an increased population of orphaned and vulnerable children.

As an organization specializing in vulnerable children’s care and community flourishing, Horizon is well-positioned to help bring more children into a safe and welcoming home — and they have a plan to accomplish it.

Raise the Roof is a campaign dedicated to new housing construction, transitory rental housing, and the caregivers and furnishings needed to turn these houses into welcoming homes. Horizon is actively partnering with local companies to sponsor this work, and is looking to connect with individuals and businesses in and around Lancaster.

A Raise the Roof event is set for Thursday, August 11 at Tellus360. All are invited to drop in between 5 and 8 p.m. to network and celebrate the collaborative work within the Lancaster community to give the gift of home to children around the world.
