The Workshop Lab Site Professional Learning is being conducted in the South Bay Union School District and is based on the training provided at Columbia University’s Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, one of the most renowned training centers for teachers. This training supports teachers with experts modeling mini-lessons, conversations about observations, and collaborative group discussions. Teachers also work to fine tune formative and summative assessment and are able to more accurately measure their students’ progress.
They are able to provide greater support where the class is struggling and effectively applaud students where the class is excelling. During this rigorous training program, teachers have the chance to observe one another and provide constructive feedback, creating a collaborative learning experience for all participants. More importantly, South Bay Union School District is keenly aware that expansion and growth can only occur through exploration of the unknown; that being said, this training program provides a unique setting where risk-taking is promoted.
The district has implemented this new learning experience for teachers to improve the quality of instruction available for all grades. South Bay Union School District is committed to strengthening literacy for every child, and the way to achieve this is by creating an environment where students can fall in love with reading from an early age. More specifically, educators in the district are working tirelessly to ensure that every child is able to read at grade-level by the third grade. With a focus on the teacher training using the lab-site construct and effective practices, students will benefit from the countless educational resources from Workshop Lab Site Professional Learning experiences that teachers will incorporate into their curricula.
