NHV recommends pet parents supplement their dog or cat’s diet with healthy pet specific home-cooked meals made with healthy, organic ingredients. Some pet parents, choose to only feed home-cooked meals, so that they may avoid some of the additives, colors, modified substances, or preservatives that are often found in some commercial brands of pet food.
These ingredients can build up in the body and can cause kidney or liver issues down the road, or cause other health conditions like heart disease or skin problems. If choosing to only feed home-cooked, make sure you work with an accredited animal nutritionist or veterinarian so that your pet is getting all the nutrition they need. A great resource to find a board-certified animal nutritionist is through the American College of Veterinary Nutrition.
Carefully prepared, home-cooked meals that take into consideration the dietary needs of your pet’s age, breed, and health conditions are a fun and easy way to show your pet just how much they mean to you. One of our favorite recipes is the Chicken Liver and Blueberry mix that is great to use as a topper over your pets’ regular high-quality canned food to provide extra nutrients. This recipe can last for about 4 days in the refrigerator and is very nutritious for both dogs and cats.
RECIPE: Chicken Liver and Blueberry Delight
INGREDIENTS
Celery (1/2 stalk)
blueberries (1 cup)
carrot (1)
pear (1)
apple (1)
pealed acorn squash (1/2)
beans (handful)
Chicken Liver (1.5 lb.)
Organ meat is a fantastic source of protein, iron, folic acid, and B vitamins for your pet. Whenever possible, use organ meat as your protein source.
Step 1: Roughly chop up all fruits and vegetables.
Step 2: Add all roughly chopped vegetables and fruit (not blueberries) into blender and pulse until everything is finely chopped, but not mushy.
Step 3: Put these finely chopped ingredients and the liver in a large pot with enough water to cover.
Cook on medium heat until water is reduced and mixture is dry (should take about 45min). Add 2 tablespoons of olive oil (for fat).
Once cooked, let it cool and then store this healthy mix in your fridge. Reuse whenever needed.
“When feeding your dog or cat, remember to add NHV’s Daily Supplement Kit for pets. Adding these natural herbal remedies will help increase the amount of overall nutrition your pet receives. These herbal remedies help promote a healthy skin and coat, help reduce inflammation, scavenge free radicals, help fill nutritional voids, and stimulate digestion,” concludes Patra.
The 100% natural supplements manufactured by NHV contain no added preservatives or additives; the herbs are organically grown or wild-crafted, and the formulations are recommended by both holistic and conventional veterinarians. They have also been used in veterinary teaching facilities, such as the University Of Tennessee College Of Veterinary Medicine.
