IIMSAM: 800-million people in the world suffer from hunger and malnutrition

Ambassador Remigio Maradona, Secretary General of IIMSAM, The Permanent Observer of the Economic and Social Council at the United Nations, said that more than 800 million people in the world are suffering from hunger and malnutrition, representing almost one out of every ten people.

He added on the occasion of the issuance the IIMSAM International report on Hunger and Malnutrition:  “Malnutrition is number one killer in the world with more than 159 million children under the age of five suffering from nutritional stunting and about 50 million others suffer from wasting syndrome, as well as other effects of malnutrition such as weight loss and Anemia.”

The IIMSAM International Report on Hunger and Malnutrition which was issued last week covered 82 countries, expressed concern that nearly 800 Million people remain chronically undernourished and 159 million children under 5 years of age are stunted, approximately 50 million children under 5 years of age are wasted.

Moreover, Maradona emphasized the importance of the international community working together make those efforts in order to reduce hunger and malnutrition by supporting the United Nations goals for sustainable development 2015-2030, and the United Nations plan of action for nutrition around the world.

The Secretary of IIMSAM pointed out:“Paradoxically there is also rapid increase in the number of people suffering from obesity around the world. So far the number of overweight adults is about 1.9 billion people, including more than 600 million people who are considered clinically obese. This highlights the importance of balancing the distribution of food stocks globally, in particular reducing the amount of wasted food.”

The Autonomous Intergovernmental Institution for the use of Micro-algae Spirulina Against Malnutrition (IIMSAM.) is presently accredited as observers to the United Nations Economic and Social Council at UNHQ in New York. Under the Resolution No. E/2003/212, dated 5th March 2003 and under Rule 79 of the rules of procedure of the Council and Section 74 of the regulations procedure of the functional commissions. For continuing participation in the deliberations of the Council on questions within the scope of the activities of the Organization.

IIMSAM is also an intergovernmental organization that is registered under the United Nations Treaty Series No. 37542-37543, dated 12th June 2001; by the Article 102 of the Charter of the United Nations.
