E.B. Fletcher, a seasoned educator and writer, brings her extensive experience and deep understanding of children’s needs during an illness. Why Is Ginny Anne Crying, Lincoln McCarthy? follows the adventures of Lincoln McCarthy, a charming and inquisitive Labradoodle, as he navigates the complexities of the questions and worries of his niece, Autumn. Autumn is worried about her friend, Ginny Anne and her friend’s mother’s cancer diagnosis. Autumn has many questions posed to all of the adults in her world and together she pieces an understanding of what cancer is and how it impacts both our bodies but also our emotions. Lincoln demonstrates the power of friendships and the importance of being a caring and supportive uncle and friend by taking Autumn to talk to the school nurse, Mrs. Davis. It is Mrs. Davis who sits Autumn down and shares her own daughter’s journey with ependymoma (brain cancer). Autumn listens attentively and looks at pictures of Maddie and Mrs. Davis shares Maddie’s personal journey.
E.B. Fletcher’s engaging narrative is beautifully complemented by Butch Kuchta’s vivid and expressive illustrations, bringing the characters and their emotions to life. This book is not only an enjoyable read but it also is a tool for parents and educators to discuss all the emotions that follow a serious diagnosis.
