The Afro City Marketplace has officially opened its doors within the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall, introducing a revolutionary shopping concept to the heart of Los Angeles. With a mission to “Recycle the Black Dollar,” Afro City Marketplace is a vibrant collective housing over 25 small minority businesses, offering a diverse range of products and services all under one roof.
From unique fashion boutiques and leather shoe designers to jewelry artisans and candle makers, Afro City Marketplace showcases the rich tapestry of Minority and African American entrepreneurship. Among the featured brands are esteemed names such as Nobody Jones, Afrihats, Ty Dupri, Bren Bren Bracelets, God Bless, Garifu, Onyx like the stone, Aniya Aroma Candles, Siri Ya Malkia, and Lost Found Décor. To add to their unique product offerings, the Afro City Marketplace also features a Braid Bar and an African headwrap and waist bead Bar, where customers can indulge in styling and accessorizing services.”
Recognizing the challenges faced by small businesses, Afro City founder Rwanda Ray sought to provide a solution to common hurdles including high commercial prices, employee costs, credit checks, and utility expenses. Leveraging her decade-long experience in the hair and beauty industry, Ray envisioned a collaborative platform where businesses could thrive collectively. By sharing costs, the Afro City Marketplace offers affordable retail spaces ranging from individual shelves to customizable 9 x 9 spaces, with prices starting at $150 per month and reaching $1000 per month, with most 9 x 9 spaces available at $750 monthly.
In addition to its retail offerings, Afro City Marketplace boasts a 4000 square feet event space serving as a community art gallery and selfie museum. Available for rental, this versatile space hosts a myriad of events including birthdays, seminars, conferences, fashion shows, photo shoots, brunches, meetings, screenings, and parties. Moreover, Afro City will curate a series of engaging community activities throughout the summer, including fitness classes, paint and sips, karaoke, comedy, open mics and game days.
Founder Rwanda Ray believes that small business collectives represent the future of entrepreneurship, with plans to expand Afro City Marketplace to various cities and states.
