Autism School in Toronto Launches after School Services

An autism school in Toronto has launched a series of after school activities for children with learning difficulties.

The House of Kids Development is a school dedicated to children with autism and it aims to help families find ways to build the confidence, improve communication, learn independence skills for later life and help them better interact and fit in with other children at school and in social gatherings.

The after-school club has a packed schedule of activities, including cooking, public speaking, art classes, social skills, maths, sociology, science, technology and tutoring services to complement the children’s mainstream school learning.

A spokesman from the House of Kids Development said: “Because we are outside the official education system, there are less rules and strict schedules for children to follow, and this fuels their ability to learn. We aim to coach, teach and train children in skills that will help them to live their lives like any other children.”

“Raising a child with learning difficulties can be a huge stress for parents. We aim to take those stresses away and help their children to really grow outside the education environment. Our after school program is a perfect support network for both parents and children.”

“There are a whole host of activities. Cooking is a fun way for children to learn and it teaches them about the benefits of cooking from scratch rather than reaching for ready meals or fast food. Our aim is that it makes meal times a lot easier for parents and to teach their children am fun and important life skill.”

“Many children with autism shy away from bringing attention to themselves by talking in groups of people, so as a result they can be slower to develop this particular skill set. We help them to learn tips and tricks for talking in groups, which helps to build their confidence and ability to speak to people in bigger groups.”

The House of Kids Development was set up by Toronto cognitive therapist Amir Haimove. His aim is to provide evidence-based behavioural services and learning opportunities for children with autism and ADHD all in one place and away from the traditional school and education environment.

The company offers in-home learning programs and winter and summer camps for the children. The special week-long camps give the children the opportunity to take part in cooking, animal training, role playing, games and outdoor skills. The camps are designed to help the children to make friends, improve their social skills and tool them up for better learning at school and a more independent way of living in the future. The camps are for children with ADHD, autism, anxiety and other disorders.
