Chula Vista Elementary School District Partners with Qualcomm to Foster Interest in Computer Science and Engineering

5 Apr, 2017 – A city with an abundance of communications and engineering companies, San Diego has become a magnet for young, high-tech minds to fulfill its demand for new and exciting breakthroughs. Qualcomm, a Sorrento Valley-based communications giant, has recently placed a vested interest in the area’s schools by promoting the popularity of computer sciences and engineering.

Chula Vista Elementary School District, home to some of the best schools in South County San Diego, is just the third district chosen to host one of Qualcomm’s new learning centers. Inspired by Qualcomm® Thinkabit Lab™, Innovation Station received their stamp of approval in 2016, following massive successes by the Feaster Charter School. Residing in an under-utilized section of the Chula Vista City Public Library, the center is a place full of hands-on scientific experiences where kids can learn to influence technology and have fun doing it.

“This is really about leveraging our business partners, leveraging our partners within the city, to scale steam integration on a large scale, here, for Chula Vista Elementary School District students,” says Matthew Tessier of CVESD. “We realize that for kids to be career-ready, they have to be creative. They have to think critically. They have to know how to embed artistic thought into something like engineering or mathematics.”

The program is supported heavily by a community looking to better prepare its young people for a growing, high-tech job market. By applying science and mathematics concepts to fun engineering activities, the district can motivate its students to work hard in the classroom and pursue lucrative careers.

Funding for the lab was provided by the City of Chula Vista, Friends of the Chula Vista Library, and by generous support from Qualcomm. The initiative is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museums and Library Sciences via the Library Services and Technology Act.
