El Cajon Police Department Forensics Shows Off Their Strengths to Students in World of Work Program Virtual Field Trip

World of Work gave hundreds of students the chance to see what it’s like to do police work in the forensics department through one of their many Meet a Pro chats. World of Work met with some amazing women in the Forensics Department for the El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) in San Diego, California. Through this experience, students can see the varied personalities and skills that go into running a forensics department smoothly. Working in the forensics department is an exciting career that involves organization, analyzing, collecting, and someone who definitely isn’t afraid to get their hands a little dirty! Some of the women in the Meet a Pro chat featured just how different they may be, but how their career fits their personality type on the RIASEC perfectly.

The RIASEC model puts careers and vocational choices into categories based on personality types, and the World of Work program uses the RIASEC model as a foundation to help students understand their place in the world and a future career. Marci Trefzger, a Forensic Evidence Technician for the ECPD, loved going outside and discoverings things to dissect. She wasn’t grossed out by the dead things she found, but instead was fascinated, which led her to a fascination with science. On the RIASEC scale, Marci is an R for Realistic and I for Investigative.

Katrina Steppat is the Property and Evidence Clerk for the ECPD and was a self-proclaimed organization nerd as kid and couldn’t go to bed without her room clean and organized. As an adult that is a strong C  for Conventional on the RIASEC model, Katrina still loves to keep things neatly organized, perfect for someone keeping track of important evidence. There is a perfect career fit for every future worker, and the World of Work brings students and schools together to the common goal of find that fit.
