Emerging artist Yanran Chen showcases her unique blend of fiction and sci-fi at ART021 Shanghai in 2023

The 11th edition of ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair is back and stronger than ever. It will be held at the Shanghai Exhibition Center from November 9th to 12th. This year’s fair boasts a record-breaking number of exhibitors, with 150 leading galleries from 16 regions and countries represented, showcasing nearly 10,000 pieces of modern and contemporary art. The impressive display highlights a vibrant art scene and growing enthusiasm for international artistic exchange, making it the largest scale ever seen, with 34 cities represented.

After ten years, ART021 has established itself as one of the most prominent contemporary art fairs in China. It is a point of reference for galleries, collectors, and artists from all over the world. ART021 is one of the main projects in the 22nd Shanghai International Arts Festival and is a significant part of the 5th Shanghai International Art Trade Week. The fair features multiple sections, including the MAINGALLERIES, APPOARCH, and BEYOND sections, as well as special programs and several themed forums. It is a crucial moment not only for well-established galleries and blue-chip artists but also for emerging talent. Among them is Yanran Chen, an 18-year-old artist who is making her ART021 debut this year with her latest sculpture.

Yanran Chen is a talented artist with a unique and diverse style. Her latest sculpture, Fictional Self, is currently on display at the 11th edition of the ART021 exhibition, having been invited by Douyin Art. The sculpture is a fusion of metal materials and painted surfaces, showcasing Chen’s creative style and distinctive craftsmanship. Drawing from her self-analysis, Chen expresses her profound thoughts and reflections on contemporary society by constructing an imaginative space focused on the human body. Through this artwork, she explores the impact of information overload and technological advancements on modern discourse, as well as delving into independent contemplation of binary oppositions such as body and mind, life and machine, and conservatism and avant-garde.

This GEN Z artist is highly acclaimed for her distinct creative style and thought-provoking works, which have earned her a devoted following on social media platforms like Instagram and Weibo. In 2023, just after turning 18, she held her first solo exhibition in Tokyo called ‘NOWHERE’, which received widespread attention and praise in the Asian art world. It became the focus of both domestic and foreign media coverage. Furthermore, her works caught the attention of the renowned Hungarian violinist, Roby Lakatos, at the recently held Art Market Budapest 2023. One of her pieces was collected by him. At the recently concluded Art Amoy International Art fair, her works were admired by many viewers.

Yanran Chen draws inspiration from Japanese comics and French experimental films for her creations. Her artistic style is a blend of Chinese and foreign influences, and primarily revolves around the theme of personal growth experiences. Her work serves as a testament to the boundless creativity and artistic potential of young Chinese artists, making it a must-see for art enthusiasts from all over the world.
