Directed by award winning writer-director, Nikolay Lebedev (‘The Star’, ‘Legend No. 17’), ‘THE CREW’ (aka ‘Flight Crew’) is an adventure drama following a flight crew who risk their lives by their utilizing commercial planes to save those trapped by lava flows from an erupting volcanic island.
‘THE CREW’ follows Alexey Gushchin (Danila Kozlovsky), who is discharged from Russia’s military service and aircraft school, but luckily awarded with a second chance to redeem himself and his career by applying to Russia’s passenger airplane program. There, he encounters his new stern, crew commander, Leonid Zinchenko (Vladimir Mashkov) and his new, breathtakingly beautiful co-pilot, Alexandra (Agne Grudyte). When the trio receives radio alerts of the disastrous erupting volcano, they set out for the life-or-death save the island’s inhabitants, as lava overflows, the air fills with fire and ashes, and life as they know it is literally crumbling beneath them. The only hope for survival is for the pilots to put their differences aside, to work together and fulfill their courageous and selfless roles as captains – to execute a successful rescue mission and save the island’s remaining survivors.
“I was irresistibly drawn to relive this nightmarish and exciting dream in reality, to feel this riot of elements, to burn myself with these lava flows of adrenaline,” wrote Kichin.
Cinematically revolutionary in Russia, ‘THE CREW’ is the second-ever Russian film shot using a 3D IMAX camera, with the first by Fedor Bondarchuk in ‘Stalingrad’ (2013). Filmed in Moscow and on the Crimean peninsula, with the volcanic-eruption occurring in the Indian Ocean, ‘THE CREW’ used two planes – the Tupolev Tu-204SM (RA-64151 board) and the decommissioned Tupolev Tu-154 of Kosmos Airlines (RA-85796 board). The utilization of such techniques resulted in top-notch special effects, with spectacular VFX graphics and GFI stunts, elevating the action-adventure, resulting in a thrill-of-a-lifetime.
“Featuring truly tense action sequences and a seamless blend of practical and visual effects, the time spent with the flight crew pays off as they each step up when needed to get their passengers home safe, resulting in a surprisingly fun action blockbuster,” wrote Film Ink’s Justin Corbett.
‘THE CREW’ was released in limited countries during April 2016. According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Vladimir Kozlov, Lebedev’s film became “the first Russian genre film to be released theatrically in that country in more than 10 years. ‘I was very impressed with The Crew quality-wise,’ Robert Jones, CEO of IPA Asia Pacific, […adding], “Russian content is getting better and better, and we feel there will be audience for it in Japan.” Grossing about grossed $23 million in Russia alone, ‘THE CREW’ was Russia’s best-performing homegrown film of 2016 and the third top-grossing movie in Russia overall. ‘THE CREW’ was featured at the 2016 Russian Resurrection Film Festival and during the 2017 APKIT Awards, ‘THE CREW’ was awarded seven awards (Special Prize, Golden Eagle Award – Best Feature Film, Best Visual Effects, Best Supporting Actor, Best Music, Best Film Editing, Best Feature Film) and prestigiously nominated four times (Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor).
“Danila Kozlovsky once again confirmed the reputation of the best actor today. His main duel on the screen is with the first pilot, played by Vladimir Mashkov. Many actor’s discoveries, first of all – the irresistible Lithuanian actress Agne Grudite in the role of pilot and, of course, the future love of the hero,” continued RG’s Kichin.
