Extra after-hours doctors are being rostered on to help relieve the pressure on Queensland’s overloaded public hospital system by providing urgent care for people in their homes.
Queensland’s largest provider of home doctor visits, House Call Doctor, is supporting Health Minister Steven Miles’ advice and urging Queenslanders to ‘keep emergency for emergencies’.
House Call Doctor Chief Executive Officer Wayne Ormond said the after-hours service had already experienced almost a 30 percent increase in patient demand with the rise in summer flu cases and was working to additional doctors on duty.
“With our hospitals at capacity it is more important than ever for people who do not have a life-threatening condition to stay out of emergency departments,” Mr Ormond said.
House Call Doctor is working to roster additional doctors across the Gold Coast and Brisbane.
Around a third of patients who attend hospital emergency departments have conditions that can be treated by a GP.
“People should always first try to see their regular GP, but for those who need urgent care at night or on weekends when their GP is closed a house call visit gives them an alternative to going to the ED.”
House Call Doctor is Queensland owned and operated and is Queensland’s leading provider of home doctor, after hours GP visits across Queensland. House Call Doctor operates from Cairns in the north to the Tweed.
