Dusseldorf, Germany – The Euroleague is the highest level NBA talent tier and most esteemed professional club basketball competition in Europe. Recently renamed Turkish Airlines EuroLeague, for sponsorship reasons, it boasts elite basketball teams, hailing from up to 18 different countries, which are members of FIBA Europe.
One of these teams is the Westfalen Mustangs, which was founded just six years ago, in 2010, and is based in Rheda-Wiedenbrück, Germany. In a move to add a dashing, promising new player, the Westfalen Mustangs recently signed point guard Ernest Owens (6’2”-180 Oklahoma Baptist) to upgrade the team’s roster for the remainder of the season. The contract will pay Owens $125,000 euros which is equivalent to about $131,000 US dollars.
Mr. Owens attended Oklahoma Baptist University as a 2-sport athlete but left the program after football season ended and right before the start of the 2015 basketball season. He made a memorable appearance last summer while playing in a Euro-League exposure camp, averaging 10 points and 7 assists per game. His impressive skills and dedicated team play caught the attention of Westfalen Mustangs coach Florian Eichstadt, who pursued a collaboration with him, which ultimately resulted in his signing to become an official member of the team.
Commenting on Mr. Owens’s addition to the Westfalen Mustangs, the team’s coach and general manager, Mr. Florian Eichstadt, stated that “Owens is an NBA caliber player who turned down an NBA-D league offer to come to Germany. He is an explosive quick guard who can break down defenses. Despite the fact that the Westfalen Mustangs basketball team has only recently joined FIBA Europe, it has made waves across the basketball world for its innovative game play and exceptional season performances. We were eager to welcome Mr. Owens aboard our team’s roster. We consider him a valuable asset, as he is sure to help garner even more victories for the team during its appearances in the Euroleague tournament, which will ultimately lead the Westfalen Mustangs to move further up the FIBA Europe team rankings, and raise its prospects for claiming the Euroleague Cup.”
Mr. Owens is set to begin playing with the Westfalen Mustangs during the current, 2016-2017 basketball season.
