New Performances of a Classic Irving Berlin Story
Holiday Inn is a musical written by Irving Berlin. It is produced by Roundabout Theater Company and opened in October. The musical is based on the 1942 movie with the same name that features the classic Bing Crosby song “White Christmas.” Most of the musical’s material is taken directly from the film, which starred Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, and Virginia Dale.
The book was written by Gordon Greenberg and Chad Hodge, who made some changes to the story and the score. Some new characters were created for the musical version. The score includes several classic Berlin songs, such as “White Christmas,” “Happy Holiday,” “Easter Parade,” “Blue Skies,” “Cheek to Cheek,” and “Heat Wave.” This is only the third time Berlin’s Holiday Inn has been staged.
The Story of the Holiday Inn
A performer named Jim Hardy decides to give up show business and move to a farm he has bought in Connecticut. He proposes to Lila, a member of his group, but she decides to pursue a new opportunity to perform with Ted, the other member of the act. Jim is struggling financially and decides to turn his farmhouse into an inn that is only open on the holidays and puts on performances to celebrate each holiday.
He gets help from Linda, a schoolteacher who sold the farm to him. Linda becomes the star of the show, and the two become romantically involved. The inn turns out to be a success, but Jim’s new life is threatened when Ted returns later after Lila dumps him and wants to convince Linda to become his new dance partner.
Talented Cast Has Earned Praise from Critics
The musical features performances by a cast of actors and singers who have earned positive reviews from critics. Bryce Pinkham, who previously earned a Tony nomination for his performance in A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, stars as Jim. Lora Lee Gayer plays the role of Linda. The play is directed by Greenberg.
