Josh Levine was the owner and founder of J. Levine Auction and Appraisal LLC. About 3 years back during an estate cleanout, his company found an original Jackson Pollock painting along with other paintings from notable artists like Kenneth Noland, Hazel Guggenheim McKinley, Jules Olitski and Cora Kelley Ward. What came after that has been a 3-year journey of investigating and attempting to prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the authenticity of the painting that could be worth several millions of dollars and unveiling a story that could easily be a Netflix classic. Fortunately, Josh Levine has decided to write a book about his experiences and how his life turned upside down since the time he discovered what he knows in his heart to be an original Jackson Pollock painting.
“This is a story I have now told and “teased” most likely hundreds of times. It’s a cocktail party favorite. Each time, I am told “That needs to be a movie,” or “I want the book,” or “that should be on Netflix. I will share the good, the bad and the ugly in this tell-all book. I am sure it will entertain, shock, sadden and frustrate all in its wake” -Josh Levine on his upcoming book based on real-life incidents.
In June 2017, Josh Levine came in limelight when his company found the historical paintings while performing appraisals for an estate sale in Sun City. The 20th-century modern art seemed out of the place for the homeowner who was moving into an assisted living but after much-dogged research into the history and paying thousands for private investigations and art forensic reports, Levine was sure of the find. Earlier in the investigation, Levine learned that these paintings belonged to the homeowner’s estranged sister, Jennifer Gordon. She was a beautiful New York Socialite who rubbed elbows & partied with the city’s rich and famous including Peggy Guggenheim and Clement Greenberg, an important American modern art critic. It became more and more apparent, she knew and was friends with the “whos who”, including the artists in her collection. She, in fact, possessed many originals from them, several of which read “To Jennifer”.
Levine found these handwritten dedications to Jennifer Gordon were by the artists, themselves. When Jenifer died, widowed and without children, several of her possessions were shipped west to her brother and the reason they eventually end up in Sun City AZ. Apart from the connections discovered between Jennifer and the power players of the art world, the authenticity of the paintings was also validated by a phone call from Barbara McKay, an Australian artist who said she was friends with Gordon and Greenberg while living in New York. She stated that she knew Gordon had owned the authentic Pollock in her lifetime.
Levine plans to cover all the twists, turns & harrowing events that have since transpired in his upcoming book. Lovers of art, mysteries and dark humor will truly enjoy the novel to come. To publish and promote the book, he is currently seeking funding on Kickstarter.com. The support of the backers will allow him to bring this amazing book to life.
