London, UK – Kirat Raj Singh, a prominent figure in the British Sikh community, has been making a significant impact on UK politics in recent years. His efforts to promote equality and justice have garnered the attention of politicians, activists, and community members alike.
Singh’s journey began when he was elected on to the national executive committee of the National Union of Students, an organisation with a membership of over 7 million students from across the United Kingdom. Having already served as Vice President at his University’s Students’ Union, Singh’s election onto the national committee of NUS made him the first Sikh to be achieved the feat. During his time on the executive committee, he quickly established himself as a vocal advocate for the rights of international students and working more closely with faith-based student organisations.
Singh’s work with the NUS caught the attention of mainstream political parties, leading him to be headhunted by the Labour Party to join as a regional organiser in the run up to the 2015 General Election. Having successfully worked his way up the party ranks, Kirat Raj Singh went on to work for numerous high profile MP’s including Ian Austin MP, Tom Watson MP and Tanmanjeet Singh Dhesi MP.
During his time working in UK Parliament for the Parliamentary Labour Party as a Senior Researcher, Singh was elected on to the Members and Peers Staff Association organisation as Vice Chair, advocating issues effecting all parliamentary staff cutting across political lines. He was also instrumental in promoting greater representation of Sikhs in government working closely with national organisations. Singh’s advocacy and work efforts have resulted in several significant milestones for the Sikh community including the approval of ‘The National Sikh War Memorial’ in a central London location and the launch of the ‘National Sikh History and Heritage Month’ in 2019.
Commenting on his work, Singh said, “My aim is to ensure that Sikhs and other minority groups are given a fair voice in politics and society. We need to work together to create a more equal and just society for everyone.”
Singh’s work has been widely recognised, with several awards and honours bestowed upon him. In 2019, he was named in the national list of ‘30 under 30’ for his contribution to political and civic duty circles, as well as being awarded the ‘Shining Light Award’ for exemplary contribution to regional interfaith activities.
With his tireless work and dedication to promoting equality and justice, Kirat Raj Singh is sure to continue making a mark in UK politics for years to come.
