As shocking depression and anxiety rates rise across the country and the media is filled with news of more suicides, the importance of mental health is becoming more and more evident. Unfortunately, high school students are not immune to this epidemic with suicide being the second leading cause of death amongst those ages 10-24. In light of this, Mountain Empire High School (MEHS) has teamed up with the Mending Matters program to help students battle this growing problem and give students the help they need right where they are.
Typically, schools have a counselor that comes in to see individual clients and then leaves, but Mending Matters operates on a different model. Mending Matters is a non-profit organization that provides mental health services to the student body of Mountain Empire High School by having a therapist on campus. The therapist is on campus at MEHS throughout the school day in order to meet the needs of individual students and to also provide group therapy.
At individual therapy, students are given the opportunity to share their experiences in a confidential and safe environment where Master’s-level therapists listen and implement therapeutic models proven to be effective in adolescents. Mending Matters also provides a variety of group therapy options that focus on specific concerns of students and their unique backgrounds. Group therapy provides a place for students to feel a sense of community and support in their struggles.
Mountain Empire High School is proud to be one of sixteen San Diego County Schools partnered Mending Matters to give their students the best possible individual, group, and crisis therapy.
