LA therapist Jessica McIntyre said anyone who wants a stronger relationship can benefit from couples therapy. She also listed the most common reasons people see therapy.
TRUST IS BROKEN
Trust can be broken in any number of ways. The most common way is through infidelity which is more than just sex. It can be emotional infidelity, lies about money or something else.
“Everyone has problems. But when those problems get to the point that you are hiding things from your partner, then you have a real trust issue. Eventually this will come out,” Ms. McIntyre said. “Trust can be rebuilt, but it does take time and a lot of commitment. I have helped many couple restore their relationship and improve beyond what they had in the beginning.”
ARGUMENTS
“It is very rare hay people do not argue. Disagreements are natural,” she said. “But when the arguments start increased and turn to trivial matters, then something is wrong. It is not longer just a disagreement.”
Finding the root cause for what sparks arguments is essential, she said.
COMMUNICATION
Communication is the key to post things in life, Ms. McIntyre said. Where people are concerned it is essential. Communication is more than just saying something to each other, she added.
“You have to talk about what happened, why it happened and what you think about it. Communication is talking about everyday things and exceptional things,” she said. “Some people just don’t know how to do this. Therapy can help them learn how in a non judgmental environment.”
SOMETHING WRONG
Trust may be there. Communication may be good. But something is just not right.
“This is more common than you may think,” Ms. McIntyre said. “It is just a generally feeling. Nothing you can put a finger on. Couples therapy can find the source of this tension and ways to resolve it. Every so often, that feeling is not right, but most of the time it is. Your gut is not going to lead you wrong.”
