Energy management and industrial automation major, Schneider Electric, announced a strategic partnership with Platinum Electrical Engineering to deploy the EcoStruxure Automation Expert solution for Brilliant Planet’s low-cost, algae-based carbon capture initiative.Brilliant Planet has developed the use of algae as an affordable and scalable method for sequestering carbon on a gigaton scale. By cultivating large quantities of microalgae in open-air pond-based systems on coastal land, they can capture up to 30 times more carbon from the atmosphere compared to the same area of forest.Carbon capture technologies, as emphasized by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), play a crucial role in addressing climate change challenges.
After eight years of research and development, including four years of trials at their facility in Morocco, Brilliant Planet is now working on a scalable platform that will be deployed in various locations worldwide.”To scale at the speed required, we need to be able to modularize our application,” said Adam Taylor, CEO at Brilliant Planet. “The Schneider Electric and Platinum Electrical Engineering solution enables us to copy, paste, and scale at each site. This means we can utilize resources more efficiently, while seeing drastic improvements in control. We hope this system provides the foundation for further expansion in the coming years.”
To facilitate the carbon capture process efficiently, a flexible and robust control system is essential. Brilliant Planet selected Platinum Electrical Engineering, a Schneider Electric Alliance Certified Partner, to implement EcoStruxure Automation Expert—the world’s first software-centric universal automation system—alongside AVEVA System Platform and AVEVA Insight, which together provide comprehensive visibility and control of operations.EcoStruxure Automation Expert stands out as a universal automation solution based on the IEC 61499 standard for interoperability, allowing easy integration with third-party equipment and seamless scalability across Brilliant Planet’s global sites.
