Leader in egg banking, The World Egg Bank has published its latest report highlighting impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and the future of the industry. The report reveals new industry trends and challenges that intended parents and healthcare providers should be aware of in the changing landscape.
Despite expert predictions of a projected single digit Compound Annual Growth (CAGR) of 3.4% in the US and 5.6% worldwide, The World Egg Bank’s industry report highlights several factors that have impacted decline in overall sperm and egg donation in the height of the pandemic. Among the factors cited in the report includes lockdowns preventing/ reduced in-person visits by donor and reduced in person visits for non-medical procedures.

It’s not just the availability of eggs/sperm that may be impacted in the future. The quality of donor eggs and sperms and the transparency of many of these egg/sperm banks are at stake. This is as a result of financial impact caused by the pandemic, which has forced many sperm and egg banks into corporate consolidations that may provide the appearance of greater availability and lower prices; however, the reality is likely to be lower quality eggs/sperm that result in fewer pregnancies and hidden costs that inflate true costs.
Alarmingly, some sperm and egg banks have even transitioned to becoming brokers to meet the demand, according to the report. Sadly, these brokers do not adhere to the traditional controls associated with egg banking; instead they acting as conduits for an influx of eggs and sperm retrieved or collected in Eastern Europe, lower-income economies, who are now using web store fronts to get donors.
The World Egg Bank has been a leader in egg banking since 2004. Known for the Gold Standard for quality donor eggs, The World Egg Bank has been honing their protocols and operating systems, adopting new legislative guidelines worldwide, and incorporating cultural, ethical, and clinical changes to the service for over 17 years. Unlike corporate entities whose main goal is the pursuit of profit, The World Egg Bank’s mission is to deliver the highest quality eggs and best experience for intended parents and their healthcare providers.
Diana Thomas is the CEO and Founder of The World Egg Bank. When asked about the new trends and challenges arising in the industry due to the pandemic, she said: “The only mission of any egg and sperm bank should be a successful quality pregnancy. This most sacred and human aspiration should never take a back seat to cost-cutting, corporate maneuvers, or investor profits.”
She further added: “As one of the first 100 women to successfully give birth via donor eggs, I understand the frustration that intended parents and their healthcare providers have experienced during the pandemic. Even one day’s delay can be anguish when you’re trying to conceive a child. However, these developing trends mean that you have to be cautious and carefully choose your egg bank before you even choose your donor.”
In light of these new developments, the report encourages intended parents and IVF clinics to look for egg/sperm bank operations which indicate transparent, integrated, end-to-end chain of control. These sperm/egg banks should demonstrate end-to-end, single standard of care, an integrated facility, and comprehensive, cradle-to-grave reporting and record keeping. Intended parents and clinics that work with egg and sperm banks that meet these high standards will experience better pregnancy results, a more streamlined process, and true lower cost.
