Los Angeles – May 11, 2018 – ‘DEATH AT SEA’ honors longtime noteworthy producer, Tony DiDio at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Kevin Connor, ‘DEATH AT SEA’ is the greatest naval adventure in the history of WWl, based on the book of the same name by Erin Brose. Produced by longtime Hollywood producer, Tony DiDio and Stuart White (credited for the screenplay) ‘DEATH AT SEA’ is insightful and intriguing, as the narrator deals with two dissimilar points of views, from both the English and German, concluding in sympathy for both sides but not taking away from the inevitable horrors and bloodshed.
Industry veteran Tony DiDio has more than three decades of hands-on filmmaking experience. He began raising finances for motion pictures in the 1970s, and has raised money for over 35 films. Best known for his production on film-favorite cult classic, Toolbox Murders (1977), starring Cameron Mitchell, grossed over $10 million worldwide and remains a hot title at all major video outlets. Toolbox Murders is a favorite with film classes as a study in low budget filmmaking and was selected by America’s best selling author Stephen King as one of the 10 scariest films of all time in 1984 for TV Guide. In the 1980’s, he produced Demi Moore’s debut film Choices, and also produced Reborn, which was a 1983 Cannes Film Festival entry featuring Dennis Hopper and Michael Moriarty.
He has lent his producing talents to numerous feature films including The Sculptress, Killer Instincts, Heart of Stone and the Tobe Hooper directed version of the classic Toolbox Murders in 2003. Tony joined forced with Tobe Hooper again for Mortuary in 2005. In 2006, Tony produced Domestic Import aka Nanny Insanity, a brilliant comedic farce, which was released theatrically in October of 2006. Most recently, Tony produced A Way With Murder, a murder-mystery thriller starring Michael Madsen.
In his thirty years of producing feature films, DiDio had never gone over budget on a film. He credits his success on following sound industry practices. Enormously through preparation eliminates guesswork on the set. It starts with an accurate breakdown of the script, which leads to an accurate production budget. During production a professional crew, a quality payroll company and an experienced location auditor is essential. The numbers are followed closely every day delivery the film on time and on budget.
Now, DiDio has collaborated with producer, White and director Connor for ‘DEATH AT SEA’ – a film that captures the horrors and catastrophes of war, providing historical details and insight from both the English and German. Based on the book of the same name by Erin Brose, the narration remains unbiased as it strives to tell a true and authentic story about the fully bloodshed war, and the eventual fate of these selfless soldiers.
When White was commissioned to write ‘DEATH AT SEA’, he had strong sentiments about wanting “to see exactly where those men died, witness the cruel sea as they did.
I needed to feel the juddering, pitching of a ship beneath me as it battled high seas and howling gales, and try to imagine the terror of being sunk there!” Emphasizing the importance of visiting the location of where your story is set, White’s trip to South America and the Falkland Islands allowed him to do research on the script, ‘DEATH AT SEA’. On the trip, White filmed out at dawn doing sunrises, then sunsets, then the ship pitching and swaying, and the stormy seas in which brave men died.
