Hollywood, CA – September 9, 2020 – From a young age, Johnathan Peter knew he wanted a career in the performing arts. As a young boy in South Africa, it was a school play that set him on the path to stardom. For most, the dream takes a predictable pattern; grow older, move to California, get work when you can and hope to be discovered. Peter’s path to stardom took a millennial twist. Rather than wait to be discovered, Peter created his own big break. In less than one year, Peter has skyrocketed to TikTok fame.
In February 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shuttered all theatres, movie and tv production studios effectively leaving everyone in the arts community without work, Peter began his TikTok channel. Within 2 months, he had 400,000 views. Now, seven short months after he posted his first video, Peter has more than 200 million views, close to 874,000 followers and more than 20 million likes.
“It’s a huge relief,” explain Peter. “I see so many of my friends and colleagues whose careers are on hold. They don’t know if or when they’ll get back to work. They’re doing what they can, but the entertainment industry has been hit very hard by the effects of the pandemic. I’m so lucky that my fan base is highly engaged and that my creative performances don’t rely on a production studio or a movie set. I work hard every day to create engaging and entertaining TikToks, but I know how lucky I am to be able to do that from my home studio.”
Peter’s videos follow a winning pattern. A close-up on Peters face and a catchy, modern song in the background that instantly encourages dancing. While Peter doesn’t speak in the videos, he lip-syncs to the phrases, questions and comments on the screen. His highly emotive expressions showcase the years of screen acting experience Peter has undertaken. He is able to move quickly from joy to despair and back. Peter’s most popular clips are in the POV genre where he poses a scenario to viewers. The talented performer then goes on to act out a mini skit which plays out the scenario, often with a surprise twist.
“I’m so grateful for my fans,” says Peter. “The videos I make are designed to entertain and to provoke thought. Most of my fans are young, like me, they log on to my channel to have a break from reality. They watch me to laugh, to forget about what’s happening in the world and to think about what they would do in the POV scenarios I propose in the clips. I’m so humbled that I can provide a diversion for my fans in these stressful times. It’s amazing to have so many fans so quickly who are from all over the world. I look forward to making thousands more videos and growing that fan base. Even when the studios come back in Hollywood, my fans will still be my number one priority.”
