The Chula Vista Elementary School District is excited to congratulate teacher Marlys Williamson at Wolf Canyon Elementary, for being named a finalist for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching! (PAEMST) Because of Ms. Williamson’s excellent work and experience, she was able to stand out among the many other applicants to qualify as a finalist.

A few of the things that set Maryls apart, besides her 13 years as a fifth-grade teacher, include her efforts to lead professional learning focused on Science and Engineering, her creation of Wolf Canyon’s Design Den makerspace, and her mentorship of multiple student teachers from various teaching programs. In recognition of her efforts, Maryl’s class is featured on the San Diego County Office Education website, and she has presented at multiple Next Generation Science Standard rollout events. She also acts as a member of the grade five instructional leadership team.

Marly’s impressive student-centered teaching and many accomplishments helped her to be in the running to be recognized as the Presidential Award recipient for the state of California. A winner for each state is chosen, then is honored at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., and receives a $10,000 special award from the NSF. The PAEMST program is administered by the National Science Foundation (NSF) on behalf of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy. The program recognizes educators who are going above and beyond teaching science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science.

The Chula Vista Elementary School District is thrilled to have a great teacher like Marlys be recognized for all of her efforts in creating engaging learning environments for her students.
