Germany continued its dominance in the global plastic fitting trade. In 2014, Germany exported 27.3 thousand tonnes of plastic fittings totaling 806 million USD, 12% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Romania, where it supplied 12.4% of its total plastic fitting exports in value terms, accounting for 33.2% of Romania’s total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, Germany was a net exporter of electrical insulating fittings of plastics. Over this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in physical terms, the difference was less pronounced.
Japan and Hungary were among the other main global suppliers of plastic fittings in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Belgium (+23.0% per year) and the Netherlands (+12.6% per year). Belgium, by virtue of this rapid growth, was able to significantly strengthen its position in the global export structure.
Germany’s top 5 trading partners in 2014 were Romania, Hungary, China, the Czech Republic and Poland, with a combined 44.6% share of Germany’s plastic fitting exports. The share of China increased (+5.0 percentage points), while the share of the Czech Republic illustrated negative dynamics (-2.5 percentage points).
