Indoor Air Pollution Could Make Allergy Season Even Harder to Deal With

Are your allergies starting to ramp up already this season? It might be due to excessive dust in your home. There are a few ways to handle this situation.

Living in Phoenix means dealing with a good amount of dust. For many residents, it feels like an unending battle – and an uncomfortable one. Dust can spread any number of pollutants and allergens around you home, making life miserable for those with allergies when springtime rolls around.

The experts at Precision Heating and Air in Phoenix say there are some easy steps you can take at home to greatly reduce the levels of dust and allergens in your home.

Use a Good Vacuum, and Do It Often

If you don’t have the right vacuum cleaner, you’ll just end up spreading dust all through the house when you’re using it. In Arizona, everyone should be using a vacuum with a HEPA filter, which will help trap all those pollutants and allergens, keeping them out of your air supply. The HEPA should be changed about every three months.

Upgrade Your HVAC Filter

An electrostatic air filter will trap far more than a basic fiberglass filter and will last a lifetime. If you remember to clean your electrostatic filter regularly, you’ll notice less dust in your home and allergy season will become much easier to deal with. At the very least, upgrade from the flat box filter to a ribbed paper air filter, which will trap more dust and pollutants than the basic option.

Have Ducts Cleaned and Tested for Leaks

Having the best air filter in world won’t do much good if there are leaks in your duct work. That’s because the pressure will suck up unfiltered air through the leaks in your ducts. Before spring comes around, you should consider having your ducts cleaned and checked for leaks. Once the leaks are sealed and your ducts are cleaned, you’ll keep a lot more dust and allergens out of the air.

Seal It Up

Check out the seals on all your windows and doors. If there are gaps, seal them up with some weather stripping. Closing up these gaps will not only help keep dust from infiltrating your home, but will also help keep your HVAC unit more efficient.
