New Study Warns Screen Time May Affect Eye Sight

“The LED screens of laptops and mobile devices emit a broad spectrum of visible light. The majority of these light beams are benign or safe, but a portion of the light emitted by these displays is high-energy visible light known as ”blue light.”

According to The Vision Council, 72 percent of American parents Report their kids routinely engage in two or more hours of screen time every day. And it is very likely most kids really spend considerably more time staring at screens than their parents really think they do.

Why Is too much screen time an issue for children?

The LED screens of laptops and mobile devices emit a broad spectrum of visible light. The majority of these light beams are benign or safe, but a portion of the light emitted by these displays is high-energy visible light known as “blue light.”

Blue lighting has shorter wavelengths and greater energy than other visible light beams. And lab research suggests certain bands of blue light might be harmful to the light-sensitive retina of the eye over the years and render children at higher risk for requiring glasses or Lasik eye surgery in the future.

Hazards of excessive screen time for children with electronic devices adds to the amount of blue light vulnerability children get over the span of their life. It is important to point out that the sun emits far more damaging blue light than computers, e-tablets, and smartphones. So the blue light radiating from electronic devices is the added exposure.

Possible risks and side effects from too much blue light for Kids can be categorized as long-term or immediate.

Immediate risks

The immediate dangers from too much blue light exposure are well documented. Many of these risks are associated with circadian rhythm disturbance brought on by staring at electronic screens far to the nighttime, which may make it much more difficult to fall asleep at a normal time.

Sleep disruption can be especially Problematic for kids, resulting in daytime drowsiness and poor performance in school because of it. Disruption of this sleep/wake cycle also can eventually result in weight gain and obesity-related health issues.

An intriguing two-year analysis of more Than 2,500 ordinary Los Angeles high school students found that teens who reported higher usage of digital apparatuses and monitor time during the study were roughly 10 percent more likely to come up with ADHD symptoms by the end of the research period.

Finally, according to The Vision Council, 30 percent of parents report their noting that their children experience a minimum of one of these symptoms after being subjected to over two hours of screen time each day:

  • Dry or irritated eyes

  • Reduced attention span

  • Poor behavior

  • Headaches

  • Neck/shoulder pain

  • Reduced attention span

  • Irritability

Long-term risks

The simple truth is that the long-term Dangers of incremental blue Light exposure from regular use of digital devices isn’t yet known. That is because no previous generation was exposed to comparable levels blue light from electronic devices from youth.

It could take several decades for the long-term consequences of extensive screen time to be fully understood. But there’s already some related research that suggests it may be sensible to limit blue light exposure at an early age.

For example, researchers in Japan and Switzerland researched what happened to the retinas of aging eyes out of blue light exposure following a cataract operation. In the study, 79 eyes received a clear intraocular lens (IOL) which didn’t block blue light, and 52 eyes received a yellowish IOL that blocked blue lighting. (Prior to cataract surgery, the retinas of all eyes were shielded from blue light by the eye’s natural lens that had become clouded by the cataract).

Two years following cataract surgery, none of the eyes that obtained the yellow IOL showed signs of developing macular degeneration, while 15% of the other eyes did.

This shows that the retina of the eye, as we age, becomes more prone to oxidative damage caused by blue light exposure. If that is accurate, then it could be prudent and wise to take action to reduce premature aging of the retina by limiting the quantity of blue light exposure the eye receives throughout your life.

The most important thing to consider is blue light exposure among children. Children have very clear and sensitive retinas so the first 10 years of life are the most important for watching out for blue light.
