Olathe Girls Softball Association Celebrates 50 Years of Softball in Olathe

Olathe Girls Softball Association, commonly known as OGSA, is celebrating its 50th year of softball in 2023

Olathe, KS, USA – This week, Olathe Girls Softball Association (OGSA) throws the first pitch to its 50th season. In 1973, OGSA began using two unlit fields at the  Kansas School for the Deaf at 450 E Park St, Olathe, KS 66061. That year,  the young ladies played ball in T-Shirts and blue jeans. Fifty years later, OGSA operates 12 fields in two different ballparks across Olathe. Dennis and Susan Tressin, Eldon Miller, and other Olathe community parents helped “birth” the league, despite having modest resources at the time.

OGSA finally found and purchased its first permanent home, 16 acres at 151st and Pflumm location, in 1983 (13901 W 151st Street, Olathe, KS 66062.  Almost 20 years later, in 2003, OGSA began operations at its second, five-field location, Lone Elm, in South Olathe. Today, OGSA operates both ballparks in partnership with the City of Olathe; Olathe maintains the facilities and fields, and OGSA operates and facilitates leagues, tournaments, and rentals.

OGSA has seen tremendous growth through the years, hosting thousands of teams in its tournaments in addition to its spring and fall leagues. This year OGSA will be hosting nearly a dozen tournaments and hosting 100+ teams in its spring and fall leagues.

“The best part of the story, however, is that as the league approaches 50 years of league operations in Olathe, its popularity and reach is still increasing, said Dan Eakin OGSA Board President. ”The reason for this sustained growth and longevity is pretty simple … those who are involved in the running of the league have a true passion for coaching players and helping them learn how to play the game.”

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary of OGSA, the association will be naming fields, hosting a special tournament, and hosting an inaugural Hall of Fame event, where it will be inducting its first Hall of Fame class.
