ORANGE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCES NEW ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES

Orange Unified School District announced the promotion of Executive Director of K-12 Curriculum, Instruction, and School Support — Cathleen Corella — to Assistant Superintendent, Educational Services. She was appointed by the Board of Education at their regular meeting on May 9 and began her new role this month.

Corella joined Orange Unified School District in 2012 as the Administrator of K-12 English Learner Services & Professional Development. Her extensive knowledge of curriculum and instruction  lent itself to advancements in 21st century learning and teaching for the District’s Educational Services Division. Corella is passionate about ensuring all students receive an equitable and quality education regardless of their background, disability, or current educational circumstance.

Some of Corella’s accomplishments as the Director of Curriculum & Instruction include the restoration of elementary visual and performing arts, facilitation of STEM Labs across the district, expansion of innovative Career Technical Education Pathways/Academies such as Aviation and Construction Trades, universal GATE screening, and the creation of OUSD’s first Early College Academy. Superintendent of Schools Gunn Marie Hansen, Ph.D. says that Corella has a proven record of excellence and “Cathleen will be an innovative and strategic leader and welcome member of executive cabinet.”

Prior to her administrative positions in Orange Unified, Corella started in education as a teacher, where she then went to take on administrative positions. In her ten years as a high school principal, she was instrumental in the design and implementation of nationally acclaimed alternative school programs that provide well-rounded academic, social, and emotional resources to students and families. As Regional Director for the Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Division of Student Programs, she continued to make positive changes as she revamped the curriculum design and professional development plan of all instructional programs.

“I am truly humbled and honored for the opportunity to continue serving our OUSD students, parents, and community in the innovative design of relevant learning experiences and programs that enable our students in finding their purpose, voice, and the ability to self-regulate their learning in school and future career endeavors,” said Corella. She is looking forward to a community-wide collaboration to advance education for all. Corella replaced Reginald “Reggie” Thompkins, who accepted the position of Associate Superintendent for the Division of Student Programs and Services at the Riverside County Office of Education.
