Play Phiona Mutesi from Disney Queen of Katwe

Jason Yip of Redmond, WA is seeking $10,000 in his Kickstarter.com pledge drive to fund his new Chess Prize website by Nov. 20. With 27 days left in his campaign, Yip has received $15 from one backer.

“There are a lot of chess websites out there and their focus is to have you go through a lot of lessons and learn how to play chess,” Yip said. “While they are good, but what if we get rewards while we learn? Wouldn’t that be better?

“PlayPhiona.com is the first project of Chess Prize. I want to create a fun environment for people to learn how to play chess and reward them.”

The concept was derived from African chess champion Phiona Mutesi, who has been named “Queen of Katwe,” the titular role of a new Disney movie. Phiona was raised in Katwe, a Ugandan slum known for its very poor living conditions.

Any amount may be pledged, but there are three levels of contributions with rewards in the Kickstarter campaign, valued at $25, $100, and $500. Rewards include a free chess set at the lowest pledge level, a lifetime subscription to PlayPhiona.com at the mid-level, and an authentic Ugandan drum at the highest level.

Yip stated that Phiona learned chess to get food but her talent for the game led to her becoming the best player in Africa.

“I believe everybody can do the same and can get access to free and fun resources that challenge your brain a little bit, especially for kids, with their brains are being developed,” Yip said. “We want our next generation to grow up with something healthy. So I partner with the real people behind the Disney movie Queen of Katwe to launch this new site.”

Yip is a father of two children and a developer who hires contractors from many parts of the world to develop projects like PlayPhiona.com

“I am the lead developer and chief architect of PlayPhiona.com, I hired a team to work 24 x 7 to build out the current state of the site in just one month,” Yip said. “but since the site is absolutely free to join, there is no revenue at this point. We want to continue build great experience for both desktop and mobile. I have the best connections in the chess field to make the site fun and engaging and the best reward is to be able to meet and greet a Disney movie star in person.”

“When you attempt all the challenges in the site, you will get a chance to meet and greet Phiona in person,” Yip said. “But the site currently is funded only by one person, which is me. And I need your help to create this new chess community that will transform the world.”

Kickstarter.com has been an online platform since 2009 for people who want to promote and raise startup capital for their creative ideas.
