Tell us about Broken Little Believer: Finding Purpose in All the Pretty Painful Pieces.

Broken Little Believer is a story of hope, resilience, and faith.

In the book, I share my story as a little girl who overcomes the unthinkable and then, as a woman, continues to beat the odds by using the broken pieces of my life to create positive outcomes for myself and inspire others to do the same.

Growing up, I spent my childhood traveling across the country in a VW bus. My transient upbringing led to encounters and experiences few would survive. From being kidnapped to singing on street corners as part of a cultish missionary, I found myself living on my own in high school and forged on to achieve more than most thought possible.

It’s my story, but it’s also a journey we can all relate to—the excitement, the challenges, the acceptance of reality vs. expectation, and finding beauty in it all. It provides a positive pathway to create a mindset of possibilities within readers as they learn to recognize the blessings in disguise. Ultimately, it’s a reminder of the fragility of humanity while showcasing the power of perseverance and perspective.

What inspired you to write Broken Little Believer: Finding Purpose in All the Pretty Painful Pieces?

I wrote Broken Little Believer: Finding Purpose in All the Pretty Painful Pieces to give the world some much-needed perspective.

When tragedy strikes, or we face circumstances beyond our control, we can choose how to move forward. We can either become bitter and resentful or better and more resilient. Bad things can happen to good people, but these things don’t have to define or limit us.

I wrote this book at a time when the world seemed to be crumbling, and people were becoming increasingly disconnected. My book and its positive message can help inspire and encourage others to find empathy, practice kindness, and hold onto hope. My goal was to help repair a fractured humanity and remind others that they are not alone.

How did your background and experience influence your writing?

I have been writing since I was a little girl. From the backseat of a Volkswagen bus, I chronicled my experiences and many encounters to pass the time. Writing has always been a cathartic outlet for me. Determined to understand why things were the way they were or why people behaved as they did, my writing became “snapshots” of human interactions and things I witnessed or felt.

I have always been a natural observer and because of my traveling, I have always been fascinated by the world, people’s behaviors, and meaningful experiences that I have had or observed. In my heart are pieces of the people I meet along the way and the places I visit. My experiences are ones I share to give hope, inspiration, and support to others who might otherwise feel alone.

As a mental health advocate and crisis intervention worker, I use writing to share words of encouragement and positive perspectives in confusing and troubling times.

What is one message you would like readers to remember?

If I were to leave readers with one message, it would be that the encounters and experiences we all have in life serve a purpose. There are some “painful pieces” and some “pretty pieces,” but they all lead us to where we are now. What we do with the life we’ve been given is up to us. We can choose to use these experiences or “pieces” as excuses in life, or we can use them as an example of what’s possible when we believe in more, strive for better, and commit to overcoming. Life is hard, but when we seek beauty and purpose, even in painful moments, we build resilience, gain gratitude, and find a more positive perspective that connects and binds us.
