Uber & ConnectedYou: Breaking barriers In IoT adoption
Uber has adopted ConnectedYou’s X-Road solution, which is a unique orchestration service platform that enables multi-carrier connectivity management globally across any mobile operator with a built-in GSMA compliant eSIM management platform.

October 11, 2022 – Uber, the tech giant that helps connect the physical and digital worlds to move people and things at the tap of a button in 10,000+ cities worldwide has partnered with ConnectedYou, Denmark based tech company that delivers next-generation connectivity orchestration solutions to enterprises and mobile operators with an aim to democratize IoT connectivity, to launch UberSIM – a carrier agnostic enterprise SIM based on eUICC technology.

Since everything runs on internet connectivity it is one of the most important aspects that defines the ability to serve customers and the quality of service delivered by Uber.

Uber has partnerships with a large number of mobile operators and mobile virtual network operators around the world to serve various IoT use cases. Uber has been dealing with IoT challenges for many years so it decided to create a dedicated team headed by Rahul Vijay, Head of Tech Deals & Supply Chain at Uber to solve IoT problems at Uber.

“We reached a point of saturation where it was not possible to improve the quality of connectivity solutions based on existing setup as we had very little control on how devices are connected. The landscape can be very complex when you have multiple use cases with different requirements in a large number of countries. We identified some of the key challenges and decided to create the UberSIM project. The goal of UberSIM project is to create unmatched connected experience and quality of service by delivering seamless connectivity for all of Uber’s IoT deployments worldwide,“ states Rahul Vijay, Uber.

“Uber is a company that does not compromise on quality and has very high standards in terms of service delivery to its customers. While advancements in technology are required, it also requires a certain mindset to break traditional barriers in pursuit of that quality and continuous improvements. Our vision at ConnectedYou is to democratize IoT Connectivity and put the power in the hands of enterprises,“ Parag Mittal, CEO & Co-founder, ConnectedYou

Uber has adopted ConnectedYou’s X-Road solution, which is a unique orchestration service platform that enables multi-carrier connectivity management globally across any mobile operator with a built-in GSMA compliant eSIM management platform.

“ConnectedYou is one of the best IoT connectivity management platforms out there in the market and is a great partner who can help solve challenges for growing IoT and connectivity needs of Fortune 500 companies.” – Rahul Vijay, Uber.

The solution has improved the quality of service with –

  • Better coverage for devices in 70+ countries that Uber operates in leading to better partner and customer experience

  • Single global UberSIM SKU

  • Unified console and API for improved business efficiency

  • Centralized business rules and alerts across multiple MNOs

  • 30% to 80% cost reduction across variety of uses

Global deployment

Multiple connectivity suppliers are needed to meet global connectivity needs. Typically MNOs & MVNOs offer a one size fits all connectivity product and the rest is left up to enterprises to figure out how to use it for their deployments depending on the use case and country of deployment.

X-Road solution uses the connectivity from different MNOs and MNVOs that Uber brings into the platform and builds connectivity products with different configurations on the SIM/ eSIM and the platform suitable for different use cases. One-size-fits-all offer from connectivity providers is converted to a specific solution that meets the needs of the specific use case and business processes of Uber.

Carrier agnostic unified Connectivity Management

For best experience it is very important that the sourcing of connectivity is not tied to the management platform. The X-Road solution enables Uber to bring their own choice of carrier’s (mobile network operators and mobile virtual network operators) into the ecosystem anytime or choose from any of the existing carriers available on the system. The platform’s framework allows quick onboarding of new connectivity partners.

X-Road solution enables a single pane of glass experience for Uber to manage connectivity for all IoT devices & use cases anywhere in the field across any connectivity supplier.

Supplier lock-ins

Mobile operators offer traditional service and relationships where enterprises get locked-in to the service because once the SIM is deployed in the device it is not technically feasible or commercially viable to change the SIM if 1 million SIMs are deployed on the field. Imagine this problem multifold and at scale with a large number of mobile operators and use cases globally.

Most suppliers offer an eUICC/ eSIM product and some MVNOs offer partial service to switch between connectivity profiles but the ability to seamlessly switch suppliers completely in real-time without any charges is very critical.

X-Road solution includes a GSMA certified eUICC management solution that creates a universally independent SIM/ eSIM product that is now fully controlled by Uber. Since ConnectedYou’s service is trusted by and pre-integrated with a large number of mobile operators it enables Uber to seamlessly switch suppliers in case of issues at-a-click without any charges.

Visibility & diagnostics for mission critical projects

Telecom standards are generally robust but everything does not always work as it should.

X-Road solution delivers a near real time diagnostics view of network connectivity along with an experienced team of level 2 support staff embedded into the project ecosystem that identifies issues quickly and efficiently along with timely resolutions. Imagine this as your enterprise’s connectivity-management-as-a-service (CMaaS)
